Sydney's last video store welcomes COVID-19 comeback

Sydney's last surviving video store is seeing a welcome resurgence in business amid the coronavirus pandemic

Streaming services had previously killed off every shop except Movie Hits in Caringbah, in the city's south. Owner Ray Kermenez was also close to closing a few months ago.

"We are the last man standing. We have noticed the decline through the years," he said. But now the store is experiencing a coronavirus-induced comeback.

People are snapping up DVD's like it's 1999.

Customer Joanne Slee said she was, a "bit sick of Netflix and Stan and Foxtel, (and) wanted to get some of the older movies." Mr Kermenez said he's welcoming back old customers.

"I have seen faces, people I haven't seen for six months," he said. "Just in March, we sold 45,000 DVDs and Blu-Rays."

For the more technologically challenged, the store is now almost an essential service.

"I am looking for DVDs for my 100-year-old grandfather, he loves John Wayne so this is just the thing," customer Thomas Long said.

However, the owner fears long term, the future looks bleak as people return to streaming.

"I can't see our business will survive in the next few months. We are basically cashing in on what we have," Mr Kermenez said.
