Moyes opens up on failed move for Man Utd and England star

David Moyes has revealed why West Ham were unable to sign Manchester United attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard in the summer transfer window.

The England star spent the second half of last season on loan at the London Stadium where he became an instant success.

He scored nine goals in 16 appearances during his time in east London, earning him a place back in Gareth Southgate’s England setup.

Lingard helped the Hammers finish sixth in the league last season and qualify for this season’s Europa League.

His fine form for the Londoners gave Moyes an incentive to try and bring the Man Utd star in on a permanent transfer.

And following West Ham’s Europa League opening night win against Dinamo Zagreb, the Scot was asked about the transfer saga.

]: “Ole made it clear to me quite early in the transfer window that he wanted to keep him. I knew pretty early in the transfer window that he was staying at Manchester United.

“I was listening to all the stuff but I had a private conversation with Ole, who made it clear he was staying.”

Elsewhere, Trevor Sinclair has claimed that .

: “I’ve said it last season, we were talking about this exact fixture, and I said Declan Rice and Soucek would walk into the Man Utd team.

“I don’t think their two or three holding midfielders would walk into the West Ham’s team.

“I think they are probably as good as you’re going to get in the Premier League at the moment.

“Soucek brings his unique running power, he’s a real boss in both boxes, and Rice with his composure and ability to run the game at the back is absolutely brilliant. The shape and the chemistry all over the pitch, everyone looks like they are enjoying playing for Moyes.”
