Toronto Star virtual event: U.S. Election 2020: Why votes from abroad matter, and explaining the battle to overcome voter suppression

With the U.S. election fast approaching, a massive effort is now underway to get voters, including more than 600,000 Americans in Canada, to cast a ballot on Nov. 3. Yet several forces — from apathy to active voter suppression — are making this push especially difficult in 2020. The Star is convening a panel of experts to discuss the importance, and the difficulty, of ensuring that every American has their say on election day. Our panellists include former U.S. Ambassador to Canada Bruce Heyman, and Vicki Heyman, co-founders of Uncharted, a social enterprise focused on community building and cross-border relationships. They are also the authors of “The Art of Diplomacy,” a call to action about the relationship between Canada and the U.S. Rounding out the panel is Ally Coll, president of the Purple Campaign, a non-profit she co-founded to address workplace sexual harassment in the wake of #MeToo. Coll also served as the deputy director of voter protection on Hillary Clinton’s team during the 2016 U.S. election.Join us for this live virtual event on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m., which will be moderated by This Matters podcast host Adrian Cheung. Submit your questions to the panellists via email to AskNow@thestar.ca. Questions will be addressed during the live event as time permits.
