KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Premier Mr Sihle Zikalala, has expressed sadness following the passing of Toyota SA executive Chairman and former CEO, Dr Johan van Zyl, whom he described as ‘one of the most formidable business minds that the country has ever produced’.

Dr van Zyl passed away on Friday night reportedly from COVID-19 related complications at a Pretoria hospital.

KZN PREMIER MOURNS TOYOTA EXECUTIVE’S PASSING

“Today we dip our hats for the fallen Dr van Zyl. Dr van Zyl’s passing comes at a time when we are engaged in the difficult task of rebuilding our economy following the damage inflicted on it by the COVID-19 pandemic and more recently by incidents of civil unrest.

“In this rebuilding process we are working closely with all social partners, including business, for which Toyota has been instrumental. We had therefore hoped that Dr van Zyl was going to be one of those from whom we continue to draw wisdom and inspiration as we embark on this task. He was no doubt one of our greatest exports in the business world. Therefore, in tribute to Dr van Zyl we call on all the people of KwaZulu-Natal, across all sectors to unite and double their efforts in ensuring that we restore confidence so as to recover the economy and attract even more investment to the province.”

Faf de Klerk under injury cloud, Springboks call up Jaden Hendrikse

Sharks scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse has earned a maiden – and surprise – call-up to the Springbok squad ahead of the third and final Test against the British & Irish Lions.

This comes amid injury doubts around first-choice No 9 Faf de Klerk.

De Klerk, who started both the first and second Tests against the British & Irish Lions, suffered what appeared to be a leg injury after a clearance kick in the second half of the second Test at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday

The 29-year-old was shortly afterwards replaced by Herschel Jantjies.

Sharks chief executive Eduard Coetzee confirmed on social media on Sunday that Jaden Hendrikse has been drafted into the Springbok squad.

It appears unlikely that Hendrikse will play in the final Test – even if De Klerk fails to overcome his injury.

The Springboks still have Herschel Jantjies and Cobus Reinach in the squad.

Hendrikse, 21, was red-carded in the Sharks’ second match against the British & Irish Lions for elbowing Liam Williams.

He was handed a three-match ban (reduced from six weeks) but has served that time by missing Currie Cup matches against the Pumas, Bulls and Cheetahs.
