PM says schools, childcare open after cost of closure revealed

Scott Morrison has reiterated that all schools in Australia can be open, after it was revealed their closure – along with childcare centres – are costing the economy $30 million.

Speaking in Canberra after today's National Cabinet meeting, Mr Morrison addressed the differing approaches by certain states.

"The expert economic advice we have received from the Treasury is that not opening schools fully is costing jobs, and it does cost the economy," he said.

"Those are the facts, and those that have led the Commonwealth Government to have a very consistent position on that.

When pressed on whether he could apply pressure to particular states, such as Victoria, to reopen schools, Mr Morrison said we "are a federation".

"The Premier in Victoria will continue to make the decisions as he sees them in relation to state schools and that's entirely within his bailiwick," he later added.

"Other premiers are making different decisions like in Queensland and New South Wales and South Australia, the Northern Territory and in Western Australia and I think they're making good calls."

COVID-19 Commissioner prepares workplaces for returns of employees

The Commissioner of the COVID-19 coordination committee Nev Power has told businesses and workplaces that it's time to have plans in place for employees returning to work.

As part of those plans, businesses must be ready to handle outbreaks in the workplace as well as how social distancing protocols will be applied.

"So, my message to business is a very very simple, continue to work with your employees to find ways of configuring your business so you are able to introduce the restrictions on social distancing and hygiene into your normal business activities," Mr Power said.

"Have plans in place and be ready as the restrictions change that you can continue to do that as more customers are coming into your business, as there is a higher level of activity and make sure that we continue to contain the virus as the economy starts to expand again."
