Venkatesh Iyer Wanted To Be In KKR Squad Since Sourav Ganguly Was The Skipper Initially In KKR During 2008-2010 In IPL

Venkatesh Iyer may have made millions of fans and followers across the globe with his entertaining style of batting in the last two matches — against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) — but the Indore-born 26-year-old is himself a huge fan of Sourav Ganguly and has modelled his game and technique on the lines of the former India skipper and the current BCCI President.

Picking up from where he had left off against RCB in his debut IPL game, where he had clobbered an unbeaten 41 off 27 deliveries to guide KKR to a nine-wicket win with 10 overs remaining, Venkatesh Iyer scored his maiden IPL half-century and guided his side to a 7-wicket victory against MI on Thursday evening.

“Honestly, KKR was the first franchise I wanted to get in because Sourav Ganguly was the captain initially so I wanted to get into KKR first. Got picked by the franchise so it was a dreamy moment for me. Everyone was very welcoming, I got a lot of gifts. I am a huge fan of Dada, he has got millions of fans around the globe and I am one of them. He has played a huge role in my batting,” Iyer told teammate Rahul Tripathi in a video posted on iplt20.com.

Sourav Ganguly started his IPL venture in 2008 with his home franchise KKR, captaining the side after his international retirement. However, KKR couldn’t taste success during Sourav Ganguly’s 3 years in the team and at the onset of 2011, the management decided to not retain him.

The current BCCI president played the rest of his IPL for Pune Warriors and then retired from the T20 league in 2012. KKR released Sourav Ganguly after three seasons as the team finished sixth, eighth, and sixth respectively in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Sourav Ganguly led the KKR team in 2008 and 2010.

Venkatesh Iyer Used To Bat Right Handed But Changed His Batting Stance For Sourav Ganguly Batted Left Handed

In a post-match show, Venkatesh Iyer said that he always had the desire to play for KKR only because Sourav Ganguly was its “captain initially”.

“I used to bat right-handed when I was very young but I wanted to exactly replicate Dada, how he hit sixes and the way he batted. He has played a very big role unknowingly in my life. I was really waiting for my opportunity and I knew I am going to get my chance,” he added.
