Keeping his rivalry with James Anderson aside, India captain Virat Kohli congratulated the England pacer after he became the first fast-bowler in the history of the game to take 600 Test wickets. The right-arm pacer achieved the incredible milestone in the third and final Test against Pakistan in Southampton on Tuesday.

Before Anderson, three bowlers had breached the 600-wicket mark but all of them were spinners – Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne and Anil Kumble. Anderson dismissed Pakistan’s captain Azhar Ali to take his 600th Test wicket. The special moment came more than 17 years after Anderson made his debut in Test cricket.

He played his first Test in May 2003 at the Lord’s against Zimbabwe and had picked up a five-wicket haul. Tributes poured in from all quarters as soon as Anderson dismissed Azhar Ali and Virat Kohli did not waste much time in wishing the England great either. Admitting that Anderson is one of the best bowlers he has ever faced, Virat Kohli wrote:

“Congratulations @jimmy9 for this outstanding achievement of 600 wickets. Definitey one of the best bowlers I’ve faced.”

The rivalry:

Over the years, Virat Kohli and Anderson have been involved in several intriguing battles on the cricket field. Anderson was clearly the winner in the early stage of the rivalry. When India toured England in 2014, Virat Kohli had a nightmare outing. He had managed to score only 134 runs in ten innings with Anderson getting the better of him on as many as four occasions.

However, the India batting mainstay bounced back in style during the 2018 tour. He finished the series in England as the highest run-scorer by scoring an impressive 593 runs. Virat Kohli and Anderson are likely to lock horns against each next year when England tour India in February. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly recently confirmed that England will tour India in February 2021.
