Cigarette and exercise ban lifted as SA moves to level four lockdown

After a long month missing some of our necessary (and naughty) luxuries, the level four lockdown regulations will afford us certain freedoms.

Cigarette and exercise ban lifted as SA moves to level four lockdown

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on the evening of Thursday 23 that certain stringent lockdown measures South Africans have been subjected to in recent weeks will be relaxed as the country moves into the newly-coined level four stage of lockdown.

One massive relief from his speech for millions of South Africans will be his announcements that the sale of cigarettes will once again be permitted, as well as outdoor exercise under “very strict conditions”.

Joggers rejoice, outdoor exercise permitted

Ramaphosa said that outdoor exercise can resume, but only under very strict conditions that will be outlined early next week.

He also said that the sale of cigarettes has resumed. The initial ban was contentious as it would inevitably cost the government millions in sin tax revenue, and seemed to exacerbate the illicit trading of counterfeit cigarettes.

Bars and shebeens will remain closed during this stage of lockdown.

Multiple arrests were made over the last month, with dozens caught trying to transport cigarettes and sell them at heavily marked-up prices.

This is a developing story
