[Watch] Paige Trowbridge in Gauteng: Cooking up a ‘diner’ with ‘Jailhouse Lock’

A few years ago my parents started a potjie competition tradition with a group of their friends. On a chosen Saturday, they would all gather at someone’s house, potjie pot and ingredients in hand, and spend the whole day cooking up a storm.

At the end of the day, they would feast and, after much banter and ragging between teams, a winner would be announced by the “judge”. The prize was bragging rights until a new winner was appointed in the following competition…but then lockdown happened.

Lockdown ‘virtual Easter cooking challenge’

One beauty about lockdown (we’ve got to look for the positives) is that it freed up a lot of time for many of us. As a family some of this time has been spent cooking together, making “team-effort meals”.

While we were sitting around the dinner table on the eve of Good Friday, I had a thought: Why not do a virtual cooking competition? As soon as my dad sent the “virtual Easter cooking challenge” out to those on the WhatsApp group, there was a keen sense of excitement and the ragging started!

Of course the food could not be judged by its taste, so the “judge” drew up an Excel spreadsheet of new criteria. The food was to be judged by its appearance and additional points were given for presentation and a theme.

Jailhouse Lock: Elvis Presley and his ‘side-chicks’

Our theme was “American” so we decided to go all out in terms of menu choice and presentation. Elvis Presley and his “side-chicks” were needed to present the competition, burgers and fries were a must for the main course and brightly coloured milkshakes topped it all off for dessert.

Elvis and his girls sat for about an hour remixing Jailhouse Rock into the Jailhouse Lock. The song aimed to bring humour to a tragic situation (as South Africans tend to do: “You either laugh or you cry”) and to introduce our competition to our competitors.

What a different kind of Easter Sunday! By the end of the day, we were all exhausted. Needless to say, the only ones who truly benefited from this competition were the network providers as there were so many messages sent on the WhatsApp group that day!

We hope you enjoy watching our remix of Elvis Presley’s Jailhouse Rock as much as we enjoyed writing and filming it.
