COVID-19 latest: Cases rise to 12 074, deaths increase by 13

President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Wednesday 13 May that COVID-19 cases in South Africa have risen to 12 074, an increase of 724 since Tuesday.

Deaths have increased by 13, with a total of 219.

There have been 386 352 tests completed to date, with 16 655 tests completed in the last 24-hours. A total of 4445 people have recovered from the virus.

‘Death toll could have been eight times higher’

Ramaphosa said that without the lockdown measures, the caseload and death toll would have been far worse than it is at the moment.

“Despite it’s duration and its severity, the lockdown was absolutely necessary,” he said. “Without the lockdown, the numbers would have soared uncontrollably. Our health systems would have been overwhelmed and many more people would have died.”

“The best current estimate is that without the lockdown, at least 80 000 South Africans could have been infected by now, with a death toll eight times higher than it is now.”

Provincial breakdown

The following confirmed COVID-19 cases have been detected in each province as of Wednesday:

  • Gauteng – 2 074 cases;
  • Western Cape – 6 713 cases;
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 1 413 cases;
  • Free State – 138 cases;
  • Eastern Cape – 1 534 COVID-19 cases;
  • Limpopo – 54 cases;
  • Mpumalanga – 66 cases;
  • North West – 52 cases;
  • Northern Cape – 30 cases; and
  • Unknown – 0 cases.

This is a developing story.
