West Ham should avoid signing ‘awful’ Man Utd defender, says ex-player

West Ham United will “go backwards” if they sign “awful” footballers like Manchester United’s Phil Jones, according to Frank McAvennie.

Jones has been a player since 2011. He has played 224 times for them across all competitions since then.

But he has fallen down the pecking order and he has struggled with injuries in recent years. After only playing eight times in 2019/20, he did not play once for the Red Devils last term.

Earlier this week, reported that West Ham were interested in signing Jones.

Ex-Hammers striker McAvennie has encouraged his former club to avoid signing him. He has told  that Jones is “all over the place” as a centre-back:

“Not for me. He is not like our players.

“West Ham challenged for the Champions League spots last season.

“They have to kick on this summer. We can’t go backwards signing players like Jones.

“He’s awful, all over the place in defence.”

“Whether it’s just and Manchester United saying the right things to keep the transfer fee high. The moment you say he’s surplus to requirements you annoy the player and devalue him very, very quickly because everybody knows you want to get rid of him.

“I said this when he went to West Ham and started playing well, Ole said ‘Oh, he was brilliant with us, he’d been training well and looking sharp’. Why did you let him go out on loan then?

“He didn’t take time to get going, he hit the ground immediately. If he was sharp in training and looking after himself like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer squad, why was he not in and around the Man United squad?

“Suddenly, he’s gone out and done well and now he’s back in. There was no reason to send him out on loan in the first place, if that was the case.

“I think this is a little bit of a bluff. They want to keep up appearances, ‘We want to keep him. If you want him, you’re going to have to prise him away rather than us give him away’.”

Watch: VVD and Gomez finally return to action for Liverpool

It’s 285 days since totemic Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk suffered a horror cruciate ligament injury in the Merseyside derby against Everton, and 260 days since Joe Gomez suffered a knee problem whilst away with England. Finally, the two of them are back out onto the pitch.

Liverpool’s title defence dramatically fell away in the absence of their first-choice central defensive partnership last season and they went on to endure a disappointing trophyless campaign before rallying to secure a top-four finish and with it, Champions League football.

There’s hope that the return of the two key defenders could result in Jurgen Klopp’s Reds challenging for major silverware again next term, and their return is well-timed – it’s just over a fortnight until the new Premier League season.
