Willow Fire Breaks Out Near Big Sur In Monterey County; Evacuations Ordered

MONTEREY COUNTY (CBS SF) – A wildfire burning in the Los Padres National Forest near Big Sur in Monterey County has grown on Friday, prompting evacuations.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, the Willow Fire broke out in the Ventana Wilderness northwest of the Arroyo Seco recreation area around 8 p.m. Thursday night. The fire has burned at least 200 acres as of Friday afternoon and is 0% contained.

“The fire is burning in steep, rugged and brushy terrain that is accessible only by hiking in. Weather conditions are hot and dry with temperatures hovering around 100 degrees with low humidity levels,” officials said in a statement Friday afternoon.

Forest Service officials said about 300 firefighters are currently on the ground, including five Type I Interagency Hotshot crews. Fixed-wing aircraft and water-dropping helicopters have also been brought in to assist the firefighting effort.

The Willow Fire is burning near burn scars of two other recent major wildfires, last year’s Dolan Fire and the Soberanes fire of 2016.

According to the National Weather Service, satellite imagery shows smoke drifting northward Friday afternoon.

The Monterey County Office of Emergency Services announced that Zone WF-1 is under an evacuation order, while zones WF-2 and WF-3 are under evacuation warnings. Among the evacuated areas include Tassajara Road from the Tassajara Zen Center to the China Camp Campground.

The cause of the fire has not been determined

CHP: ‘Aggressive’ Man Approaching Gov. Newsom in Oakland Arrested

OAKLAND (CBS SF) — A man was arrested after trying to approach Governor Gavin Newsom during an event in Oakland Thursday, authorities said.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Gov. Newsom “was approached by an aggressive individual.” The man was arrested by CHP officers after members of the governor’s security detail removed Newsom from the situation.

Newsom was in Oakland visiting small businesses to tout the state’s financial support for business owners hit hard by the pandemic.

The suspect was identified as 54-year-old Berkeley resident Serge Emanuel Benoit Chaumette Jr. He was booked at the Santa Rita Jail.

A CHP spokesperson would not confirm reports the governor had a water bottle thrown at him.

The CHP, which provides security to public officials, said it was investigating the incident.
