A man badly wounded while trying to protect others during the Perth stabbing rampage is making a slow recovery in hospital.

Truck driver Konrad Frost tried to distract Ashley Fildes during his stabbing rampage in South Hedland.

The 39-year-old was slashed in the neck when he yelled at Fildes, who was lashing out at a mother and her baby.

Mr Frost was the most seriously injured of Fildes' victims, and remains in hospital.

Mr Frost's family released a statement saying he was a "gentle giant who loves his family".

"We are all in shock something like this could happen to him," the family said.

Mr Frost is now awake and communicating with his family, but he has a long recovery ahead – still listed as critical but stable.

Fildes was shot dead during the rampage. 9News later revealed he had ceased taking mental health medications.

His family told 9News the attack was out of character and that Fildes had never hurt anybody in his life.

They said their hearts go out to his victims.
