Wright thinks Man Utd man would’ve been better off at Arsenal

Ian Wright reckons new Man Utd signing Donny van de Beek would have been better off joining their Premier League rivals Arsenal.

The 23-year-old midfielder arrived from Ajax for a fee rising to £40million at the start of the month and made an immediate impression by coming off the bench to score on his first appearance for Man Utd.

But Van de Beek will not look back on his debut fondly as , where Andros Townsend’s early goal was complemented by a second half Wilfried Zaha brace.

And Wright thinks a move to Arsenal could’ve been better for him with the huge competition for places in midfield at United.

“Donny van de Beek, he’s someone that I wish someone more like Arsenal could have taken,” Wright said on The Kelly & Wrighty Show.

“When you look at Pogba, what he’s doing, and you look at Bruno Fernandes – that is Donny van de Beek’s position.

“So people are thinking they’re going to see Van de Beek [sitting] with Pogba and Fernandes, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

“Because as much as he can play there, that’s not his preferred position to play.

“So again, spend the money, yeah he’s a great player and yes take him, but you’ve still got to look for the players that you know are going to improve your team.”

Hodgson & Ancelotti’s 1996 first managerial face-off in Serie A

Roy Hodgson first faced Carlo Ancelotti in a Serie A match way back in 1996. Hodgson’s Inter beat Ancelotti’s Parma 3-1.

When you think of epic managerial rivalries, you probably think of the 17-year battle between Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, or maybe the ongoing tussle between Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola.

Compared to those, Roy Hodgson versus Carlo Ancelotti doesn’t seem quite as spicy.

But despite meeting just a handful of times over the years, Hodgson and Ancelotti’s “rivalry” goes back a whopping 24 seasons to when the two veterans were coaching in Italy’s Serie A.
